Kozmos & Kaos serisi, tam da bu basit isteğin içinden doğdu. Kendimi fazlasıyla sıkışmış ve kısıtlanmış hissettiğim bir dönemde, bir fırçayı suya dokundurdum ve mürekkebin yayılmasını izlerken korkutucu bir şeye şahit oldum! Bir mürekkep damlasının bile hiç de özgür olmadığına… Sadece suyun izin verdiği kadar, yalnızca benim ıslattığım yüzeyin sınırlarına kadar dağıldığına…

 

Her mürekkep damlası benim gibiydi yani bir birey gibi; bir şekilde suyun akışına kapılan ama görünmeyen sınırların içinde hareket etmeye çalışan… Onları yan yana dizdiğimde toplumlar oluşmaya başladı; sınırları belli, ritimleri ortak. O anda, hem kendi sıkışmışlığımı hem de içinde yaşadığım dünyanın tuhaf düzeninin içinde nasıl da akışa kapılıp gittiğimi izlemiş oldum. Tam da bu nedenle Kozmos & Kaos, özgürlük ve sınır arasındaki gerilimi daha üretim aşamasında sergileyebilen bir seri olarak doğmuş oldu.

 

Yer yer kullanılan geleneksel motifler farklı bir düzeni, birden çözünmeye başlayıp ortaya çıkan organik biçimler de bir başkasını temsil etmeye başladı. Bir kompozisyon olarak çizilen tüm sınırlar yalnızca estetik referanslar olarak kalmadı, farklı sistemleri temsil eden topluluklar gibi ayrışmaya başladı. Devam eden süreçte de insanın dahil olduğu birçok şeyi içine aldı; siyasi olguları, inanışları, doğaya yaklaşımı, köken veya aile kavramını…

 

Özgürlük nerede bitiyor?

Sınır nerede başlıyor?

Biz tam olarak nereye düştük?

Var olmaya çalışırken ne kadar dağıldık?

Ve nasıl bir iz bırakıyoruz?

Bu soruların tek bir cevabı yok ama suyun yüzeyinde dağılan mürekkep her seferinde bir cevap biçimi öneriyor, ben de onu izliyorum.

 

✦ Teknik: “Suyun İzin Verdiği Kadar”

Eserler wet-on-wet tekniğiyle üretiliyor. Su ve mürekkep, kontrol ile rastlantısallığın tam ortasında buluşuyor. Mürekkebin yayılma biçimi tamamen sezgisel ama formların yarattığı sınır bilinçli.

Bir yandan hücresel bir yapı izler gibi, bir yandan evrenin oluşumuna tanıklık eder gibi. Düzen ve dağılma aynı yüzeyde birlikte oluşuyor. Aslında üretim biçiminin kendisi de sanat eserinin bizzat kendisi oluyor.

“All I wanted was to watch at least a single drop of ink spread freely.”

 

The Cosmos & Chaos series was born precisely out of this simple wish. In a period when I felt extremely confined and restricted, I dipped a brush into water and, as I watched the ink spread, I witnessed something frightening! That even a single drop of ink was not free at all… That it spread only as far as the water allowed, only up to the limits of the surface I had soaked…

 

Each drop of ink was like me, like an individual; swept along by the flow of the water, yet trying to move within invisible boundaries… When I placed them side by side, societies began to form; with clear borders and shared rhythms. In that moment, I found myself watching both my own sense of confinement and the way I was being swept along within the strange order of the world I live in. For this very reason, Cosmos & Chaos came into being as a series that is able to display the tension between freedom and boundary already at the stage of its creation.

 

The traditional motifs used here and there began to represent one kind of order, while the organic forms that emerged as things suddenly started to dissolve began to represent another. The boundaries drawn as part of a composition did not remain mere aesthetic references; they began to split apart like communities representing different systems. As the process went on, it also came to encompass many things involving human beings: political phenomena, belief systems, our approach to nature, the notion of origin, or the idea of family…

 

Where does freedom end?

Where do boundaries begin?

Where exactly have we landed?

How far have we scattered in our attempt to exist?

And what kind of trace do we leave behind?

 

There is no single answer to these questions, but the ink spreading across the surface of the water proposes a different form of response each time, and I simply watch it.

✦ Technique: “As Far as the Water Allows”

The works are created using the wet-on-wet technique. Water and ink meet right in between control and chance. The way the ink spreads is entirely intuitive, but the boundary created by the forms is intentional. At times it feels like observing a cellular structure, at others like witnessing the formation of a universe. Order and dispersion arise together on the same surface. In fact, the mode of production itself becomes the artwork itself.
