Myths and Dreams

Pozitif bilimlerin egemenliğiyle biçimlenen modern insan zihni, geçmişin sözlü anlatılarını—mitosları ve masalları—ikinci plana itti. Oysa bu iki anlatı biçimi, düş gücünün en eski ve en kolektif formlarıydı. Bilim çağında unutulmaya yüz tutsalar da insan rüya görme yetisini hiç kaybetmedi. Rüyalar, çağlar boyunca bireyin en gizemli ve en kişisel deneyimlerinden biri oldu. Modern dönemde daha önemsiz sayılan rüyalar, Freud’un çalışmalarında çok daha farklı bir konumda buluyordu. Onun ifadesiyle, “Rüyalar bilinçaltına giden ana yoldur.” şeklinde tanımlanıyordu.

 

Günümüze bakıldığında, zihnin uyanıklıkta bastırdığı arzular, korkular ve anılar rüya yoluyla yüzeye çıkıyor. Malzemesini gerçek yaşamdan alsa da, bu malzemeyi dönüştürerek yeni, özerk imgeler yaratıyor. Bu imgelerin kaynağı çoğu zaman hatırlanmasa da; rüyaların büyüsü ile insan zihninde yeni modern mitoslar belirmeye devam ediyor.

 

“Mitoslar ve Rüyalar”, bilinçdışının bu yaratıcı potansiyelini, mitolojik hafıza ile bir araya getirerek düşsel bir görsel anlatı kurmayı amaçlıyor. Mitosun sezgisiyle, rüyanın dilini ortak bir noktada buluşturmaya çalışıyor.

Shaped by the dominance of the positive sciences, the modern human mind has relegated the oral narratives of the past—myths and fairy tales—to the background. Yet these two narrative forms were among the oldest and most collective expressions of the imagination. Though they have faded in the age of reason, humanity has never lost its ability to dream. Throughout the ages, dreams have remained one of the most mysterious and personal experiences of the individual. In the modern era, often considered trivial or meaningless, dreams were placed in an entirely different context through Freud’s work. As he put it, “Dreams are the royal road to the unconscious.”

 

Looking at today, the desires, fears and memories that the mind suppresses in waking life come to the surface through dreams. Although it takes its material from real life, it transforms this material and creates new, autonomous images. Although the source of these images is often not remembered; new modern myths continue to emerge in the human mind with the magic of dreams.

 

“Myths and Dreams” seeks to build a visual narrative by bringing together the creative potential of the unconscious with mythological memory. It attempts to unite the intuition of myth with the language of dreams on a common ground.
